The area of Jaco Beach is one of the destinations with the best routes in the Central Pacific and Costa Rica in general, considered by many the paradise of mountain bike, Every year Jaco Beach is the starting point for the worldwide known mountain bike race “Ruta de Los Conquistadores” which takes place in August on every year. This competition gathers the best mountain bikers from all over the world, and it takes them through the best mountain bike trails in the country, from the west coast to the east coast of Costa Rica.
Some of the best Jaco Beach Mountain Bike routes are:
Miro mountain: This 6 Km route communicating the beaches of Jaco and Hermosa. The trail starts right in front of the gas station El Arrollo, in the south end of Jaco on the Costanera road. That route includes medium and high intensity hills to climb. The most attractive characteristic of this route is the beautiful landscapes and ocean. This is the local’s favorite, due to the amazing rainforest and ocean views.
Piedra Bruja: This route begins at the entrance of a dirt road right across form the Maxi Pali supermarket on the Costanera road. We recommend you use this route early in the morning or in the afternoon when the sun is not too strong, since the first hills are really heavy. This trail connects Jaco wtih the town of Bijagual. You will have the opportunity to see waterfalls, rivers, beautiful Costa Rica rainforest and incredible views of the Gulf of Nicoya and the pacific coast line all the way to Quepos.
Herradura Canopy: the route begins at the crossroads of Herradura town towards the church going east, and then taking the road to the local canopy tour. Right before the canopy’s main entrance you have to turn left. This route will take you through the rainforest and as you start to climb up just few kilometers later it brings you all the way back to the Costanera but this time in front of Villa Caletas Hotel. We recommend going back the same way since coming down by the main road could be very dangerous on traffic.
Mata Platano: The route begins in the town of Quebrada Amarilla, about 12 kilometers south of Jaco. You can do up to 60km on the way there and back for a good full day riding. One of the main attractions of this route is the Tulin River, where you can swim and see the local beauty of it flora and fauna.

Recommendations for a successful Jaco Beach mountain bike ride:
- Make sure you bring enough water and some money in case of emergency. It is also a good idea that one person of the group bring a cellphone.
- Apply sunscreen several times during the ride since the humidity and sweat washes off.
- For all the routes we suggest you go with other people and do not start too late, because in the mountains it gets dark quick.
