Tortuga Island Costa Rica a protected tropical paradise close to Jaco
Just 45 minutes from Jaco, there are two islands that comprise 120 acres, surrounded by crystal clear waters which abound with marine life for which they are recognized for enjoying diving, snorkeling and other aquatic activities. Alcatraz Island is the smallest and the largest in Tolinga, which means turtle in Huetar Indian language, early inhabitants of the Central Pacific region.
These islands are owned by the State and leased to the Costa Rican family of Mario Cubero Fernandez, who was commissioned for 30 years to protecting the islands, reforest them with native species which had disappeared from there and ban hunting. On the island, protected as a reserve by the laws of Costa Rica, had located a shelter for rescued animals where they have work to rehabilitate them for possible reintegration to the nature.
Tortuga Island is located in the southwest of the Gulf of Nicoya, has 500 meters of beach in public areas. In its depth are three sunken vessels, more than anywhere else in Central America. These are a 95 feet coast guard ship called Franklin Chang Diaz, after the illustrious Tico astronaut. It is located at a depth of 23 meters up to 17 meters. The other vessel is a Guard coast ship called the Coronel Alfonso Monge and it is 82 feet long. The third is called Caroline Star and located 30 meters (100 feet) and is where one usually sees White Sharks flap along with many Snappers and the usual variety of other fish for the Tropical Pacific. Other attractions into the park includes horseback rides, canopy and hiking trails. On Tortuga Island you can find a convenience store, souvenir shop, an internet café, public toilets and a place to guard your clothing.
Several companies and boats can take you to this wonderful Tortuga Island. Among the options are small vessels that departs from Herradura Bay. There are also Catamaran Tours which includes meals, snacks, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. These companies includes transport from anywhere in Herradura and Jaco and even includes beach games equippement and snorkel gear. This option is highly recommended if you want to maximize the Tortuga Island experience. Prices vary between $75 and $120 per person. When making a reservation, take into account that there is also tours departing from Puntarenas, which can add time and transport costs, so be sure to ask where you are supposed to meet your boat or Catamaran Tour.
