Peyper has not refereed a global contest given that the 2019 Rugby World Cup due to coronavirus travel constraints.

Coincidentally, the last match he organized likewise included France.

In 2015, he was the male with the whistle for Wales’ controversial World Cup quarter-final triumph which saw France’s Sebastian Vahaamahina sent for an elbow to the face of Aaron Wainwright.

While it was the ideal choice, Peyper earned the ire of French rugby when he positioned for images with Welsh fans making a mocking elbow gesture. As an outcome, he was ruled out for either of the semi-finals or the final.

Peyper will also organize the match between Scotland and Italy at Murrayfield the following week.

The Englishman will referee Wales’ tournament opener with Ireland and France v Scotland in the 3rd round, taking his variety of worldwide video games to 95 by the end of the Championship.

Nigel Owens became the very first referee in rugby history to reach 100 Tests when he was on the whistle for France against Italy in the Fall Nations Cup in November, but the Welshman has actually now retired from global officiating.

And without Owens, Welsh representation in the list of officials now entirely originates from Craig Evans, who will run the line in the Italy v Ireland, England v France and Scotland v Italy matches.

Graham Mourie, chairman of the World Rugby match authorities selection committee, said: “The 2021 Guinness Six Nations marks an important milestone for our match authorities.
